Known for his rhythm-first approach to teaching and ensemble playing, Michael Isabell explores accompaniment as the foundation of great swing. Drawing on years of experience leading one of Colorado's longest-running weekly swing jams, performing with regional ensembles, and coaching students around the world, Michael demonstrates how groove, dynamics, articulation, and active listening transform rhythm guitar from a supporting role into the heartbeat of the music.
Participants will explore the art of accompaniment by developing a solid swing feel, listening deeply, and learning to communicate through rhythm. Through practical demonstrations and hands-on ensemble playing, the workshop reveals how subtle musical choices help an ensemble breathe, swing, and connect.
Whether supporting a soloist, locking in with another guitarist, or driving an entire band, students will leave with practical tools to create accompaniment that is confident, expressive, and deeply musical.
